BHP is working with SiTration on a two-stage pilot to recover copper from mining-affected water at Copper Cities in Arizona’s Globe-Miami district. BHP says earlier laboratory testing demonstrated production of LME Grade A copper.

An initial stage beginning in August was designed to test continuous, autonomous production over about a month. A larger deployment planned later in 2026 would seek to produce up to two tonnes of copper cathodes.

Copper Cities operated as an open-pit mine from 1954 to 1975, with leaching continuing until 1982. The announcement concerns a pilot and planned expansion, rather than established commercial output.
