Natural Resources Canada says McIlvenna Bay produced its first copper concentrate in June 2026, followed by zinc and pyrite concentrates in July. The Saskatchewan project, developed by Eldorado Gold, was moving toward commercial production when the department published its September update.
The mine has connected to SaskPower through an 85-kilometre transmission line and a new substation. Eldorado is evaluating an increase in processing capacity from 4,900 to about 7,000 tonnes per day and a possible silver-lead circuit, according to the release. Those changes remain under evaluation.
Why it matters
New domestic production is one part of Canada’s effort to strengthen critical mineral supply chains. McIlvenna Bay’s milestone shows the transition from project development to initial output; it does not establish that the operation has reached commercial production.
