Natural Resources Canada says completion of the Onaping Depth Project shaft has provided first access to nickel ore at Glencore’s Craig Mine in Ontario. The August announcement identified first production from the new zone as a milestone expected later in 2026.

The department reports nearly $2 billion in private investment since construction began in 2019. Federal support of up to $11 million through a decarbonization programme is intended to support a battery-electric underground fleet.

The project is expected to extend nickel production in the Sudbury Basin beyond 2040. Production timing and the mine-life extension remain expectations reported in the source announcement.
